Sarah

“Sarah,” Gorion breathes out, stopping everything that he is doing just to look at me. “What are you doing here?”

“I wanted to apologize to you.” Closing the door gently, I sigh. I don’t want to do this, but my conscience keeps nagging me. “I’m sorry for running off when we were in the meadow together. I got scared and I didn’t know what else to do, so I ran.”

“Were you afraid that I was going to hurt you in any way?”

The words fumble out of my mouth. Thanks to the darkness, he doesn’t see the redness forming in my cheeks.

“N-No, I trust you. I know that you would never hurt me. At least, not physically.” I smile. “Things are much different from how they once were, don’t you think?”

“Why, yes. I agree.” Gorion sets aside his maps and his trinkets, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed over his chest. “At one point, I wanted to kill you. I did not know any better, back then. I was consumed with rage and I wanted to take it out on someone.”

He means that. Even though he doesn’t want to see me injured, there’s a possibility that he will hurt me in other ways. That is what scares me. Men can make empty promises but never fulfill them. What do I do when things come to that point?

Cry my heart out? Vow to never love again? That’s useless. I want to avoid that from happening in the first place.

“I understand. I’m glad that you see things differently now.” I tuck my hair strands behind my ear, keeping a safe distance between him and I. There’s no need for things to escalate, that’s not what I’m here for. “But don’t you think there’s still a chance that you could hurt me in other ways?”

Gorion frowns deeply. My remark strikes a chord in his heart, I think.

“Why would you say something like that, Sarah? I would never hurt you!”

“I believe you. I don’t think you want to punch me or throw me against a wall, but there’s a chance you could break my heart.” I avert my gaze, fiddling with my hands instead. It’s difficult to push these words from my mouth. “I’ve met a lot of disappointing men in my life. Some of them were in my own family, like my brothers. They would tell me one thing, but go behind my back and do something else. Something I didn’t want them to do.”

“Why do you compare me to them?” Gorion asks sincerely. There’s a softness to his voice that I can’t ignore. It makes my heart skip a beat. “I am not like them. I am disgusted by the possibility of ever hurting you in such a way. Why do you not believe me when I say this? What more can I do to prove this to you?”

I freeze. Things are taking a different turn from what I expected. He approaches me with a step, but I push myself against the wall.
